'Intensives' - Student Supports

All You Need to Know About INTENSIVES

*Intensive classes began on Monday, February 1st. Students in an intensive class will use specific workbooks and materials that they received during supply pick-up. If you have not yet picked up your student's supplies from the school, please contact Ben Imlay directly at (614)-570-7724.

What are intensive instruction groups?

Intensive groups are more concentrated small instruction groups for students who need more support that Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions offer. The goal is for students to focus on fewer high level reading and math skills so that they can build stronger understanding in reading phonics, reading fluency, reading comprehension, math number sense, math fluency, and math problem solving.

Who receives intensive instruction?

For grades 4 through 6, their groups were determined based on students who read at a level K Fontas & Pinnell reading level and below and students whose MAP scores for math were equivalent to a 2nd grade level and below.

For grades 7 through 8, their groups were determined based on students who read at a level S Fontas & Pinnell reading level and below for 7th grade and a level T Fontas & Pinnell reading level and below for 8th grade. For 7th grade math, students who’s MAP RIT Scores were at and below a 205 qualified for intensives. For 8th grade math, students whose MAP scores for math were equivalent to a 5th grade level and below qualified for intensives.

What will students be doing?

Students will do work that is an extension of what they do in guided reading groups and math intervention groups. The work may vary depending on the skill that is being targeted as well as the overall learning level of students in those groups.

How will parents will be updated on student progress?

Bi-weekly, parents will receive an email with a summary of student attendance, progress towards mastery, and any notes that will be helpful for them to continue to support their student’s growth at home.
